The Washington Theater majestically kept watch
over Quincy’s Washington Square for nearly eight
decades. It first opened its doors on June 19, 1924 as
a vaudeville theater.
Two years later, in 1926, the theater was
remodeled to better accommodate both patrons and
performers. Improvements included a new cooling
system, a lower stage for better visibility, interior
redecoration, and additional street exits.
Over the next several decades, this theater was host to countless vaudeville acts and
photoplays, including “The Brown Derby” and “The
Lights of New York,” Quincy’s first all-talking picture.
On October 1, 1971, the Kerasotes Theater
purchased the Washington Theater and operated it as
a movie theater for the next decade.
Sadly, on September 30, 1982, the curtain was lowered
for the last time. Over the years it has slowly deteriorated and fallen prey
to neglect.
This wonderful gem can serve our community
as it once did and in many more ways by providing
economical and cultural support to the Tri-state area.
We thank our supporters. If you are interested in volunteering
your time and/or talents to this project please contact
us so that we can keep you notified of its progress.
