Press Release:
The Friends of the Washington Theater announced they will hold their first event in the historic Washington Theater. “Something Unexpected” is the title of the fund raiser and will feature the Quincy Dance Theatre. Kyle Trudell, President of the commission, says “We want to the community to see the tremendous asset which is a part of the downtown area and the community. Many people of the area have not been inside this theater. You can’t begin to appreciate this theater until you see it for yourself.” The event is planned for September 15, 16 and 17. Opening night and Saturday’s performances will begin at 8pm. Sunday’s show will be at 2pm. The opening night performance will feature a special party following the performance. Ticket information will be announced in the coming weeks. Denee Jordan is the director of the Quincy Dance Theatre. She approached the commission with the idea earlier this year. Jordan says “We want to present something unusual in an unusual environment. This is what is possible with nothing done to the theater itself.” The Quincy Dance Theatre was formed in March of this year. Jordan has made a career in classical ballet and modern dance and was the former director of the Plexus Dance Theater in California.
Trudell says “We will be working on the building to get it ready for the event. We are beginning by cleaning up the front of the building to make it more presentable. Gary Butler has been commissioned in a joint venture with the Park District to paint a mural on the front of the plywood entrance. Other enhancements will be made inside the theater to make sure our visitors are safe and comfortable.”
An independent study was recently completed by Janis A. Barlow and Associates and Dulcie Gilmore and Associates. The findings of the study reveled there was evidence of a viable future for the Washington Theater. It was seen as key to achieving the downtown vision plan. The firms made their presentation to the Quincy City Council on March 27th.
The Washington Theater is currently owned by the City Of Quincy. All the money directed towards the renovation has been through state and federal grants and fundraising activities.
